Acne Birth Control Pill Treatment

Introduction to Acne Birth Control Pill Treatment:

Acne is one of the skin conditions when the pores in our skin become clogged. Our body contains pores on the surface of the skin and each pore opens from a canal called follicle. These follicles are required for hair growth and contain skin oil produced by oil glands. Under certain circumstances these oil glands produced excess oils that chokes the pores. This blockage causes acne. Although acne is most common among teenagers but it can occur at any age. The common factors responsible for acne are hormonal changes, certain drugs and certain cosmetic products.

Androgen Hormone:

In some females, acne can be caused by excessive production of androgen hormone. If the hormone androgen is in excess in your body, your skin oil glands will produce more oil and therefore the chances of clogging are more. In those circumstances, your acne is likely to flare up especially preceding your menstrual cycle. Sometimes you may also have irregular menstrual cycles. Androgen is also responsible for excessive hair growth especially on unusual places. Your blood sample may also show elevated levels of androgen hormone.

Once your doctor confirms that your acne is due to hormonal changes, he or she will prescribe hormone therapy for you. Although there are different hormone therapies, your doctor may decide which is most suitable for you. You should not initiate any of the hormone therapy yourself and the therapy should be done under the supervision of your doctor. It is a common practice and expert’s advice to use low-grade birth control pills or contraceptives to treat acne.

Anti-androgen for controlling acne:

Anti-androgen taken orally and should be taken only if your doctor prescribes these medicines. These medicines control the excessive production of androgen in ovaries or adrenal gland and thus help controlling excessive oil production in oil glands. The controlled skin oil production will lead to reduction in pimple size and thus will relieve from acne. Anti-androgen such as spironolactone has anti-androgen benefits and is found very effective for controlling acne, however this medicine can cause birth control defects in fetus.

Estrogen and progestin for suppressing acne:

Another birth control pills such as the combination of estrogen and progestin if taken orally is also beneficial for controlling acne caused by hormones. There are a few medicines approved by FDA for this purpose and you should consult to your doctor before taking any of the medicine. These medicines have fewer side effects than anti-androgens and a very few people have reported hyperpigmentation on the skin.

Carticosteroids for controlling acne:

Another form of birth control pills is carticosteroids such as dexamethasone. A low dose of these medicines has been found useful in controlling the androgens produced by adrenal glands. These are most suitable when used in combination with other oral birth control pills, however in certain circumstances these may not be suitable and if taken can actually flare up the acne symptoms.
