Acne and Acne Treatment during Pregnancy

Introduction:

Although acne and pregnancy are two different terms, during pregnancy the eruption of pimples in the face is very common especially during the first three months. During the pregnancy the acne occurs due to change in hormones in the body. The change in hormone level in the body causes the production and secretion of more skin oil from oil glands beneath the skin. The more oil produced and released can cause blockage of the skin pores and thus will increase the likelihood of acne.

Plan medicine before pregnancy:

It is better to see your dermatologist before you plan to get pregnant. Your doctor must know your plan so that the medicine prescribed to you for your acne is changed or altered. Some of the antibiotics should be changed or altered, as these are harmful for the fetus. Tetracycline antibiotics should be completely stopped as these can damage the bones of unborn child. Although erythromycin seems to be safe during pregnancy, it is better if you can avoid medicines during pregnancy.

Acne in pregnancy:

If you are pregnant and see the eruptions of pimples on your face, you should immediately tell to your doctor that you are pregnant. During the initial days of pregnancy the hormone progesterone level increases and it causes increased production and secretion of skin oil and it is behind your acne and your doctor would like to confirm the level of progesterone in your body. Although after three to four month the level of progesterone comes down to normal and the acne also comes down. Your doctor would like to prescribe you medicine, which is safe to unborn child.

During pregnancy many women use natural home made remedies for treating acne, as these are the best for unborn child. It is better to use face wash regularly but take that you do not rub the pimples. Using a suitable moisturizer that do not flare up your acne and using papaya paste on the acne site is also beneficial. During pregnancy garlic is also one of the best option to control acne. Gentle face wash with peppermint oil is also useful for controlling acne. Drinking a lot of daily also helps in controlling dryness of face and hence acne.

Over the counter medicine:

We can see many over the counter medicines available for acne. There are a lot of options available for all of us for treating pimples, however especially during pregnancy we should avoid all these over the counter medicines whether these are oral or topical. Many websites claims that they have developed the new natural class of medicines and such tall claims fails most of the times and even then no medicine whether natural or over the counter should be taken without consulting your doctor. If you see the eruptions of pimples on your face and you are pregnant do not use benzoyl peroxide gel or cream available over the counter.
