LIFE'S A BEACH
Research has shown that it's not just the hypnotic sound of the ocean that makes us crave the beach experience. The sea is nature's mineral-rich form of hydrotherapy. When our skin absorbs the minerals and trace elements contained in seawater and we expose our bodies to the negative ions generated by the crashing waves, it produces relaxation and a sense of well-being. Having the glow of summer on your face doesn't hurt either. But, we know what you're thinking "the sun causes cancer and the ocean is miles away and full of pollution". So, how about the essence of the beach experience without ever having to leave your home or dislodge one pesky particle of sand?
Begin your seaside escape with a soak in a mineral bath. Mineral salts come in many forms, and the best are those taken directly from the ocean. Since, this is all about relaxation, and not about replicating the "essence of low-tide" add a little aromatherapy such as lavender or helicrysium. These essential oils have been shown to increase the body's production of the "feel-good" neuro-chemicals called beta-endorphins.
Continue your beach-in-the-bathroom experience with a sea-salt exfoliation to prepare your skin for soaking up the virtual "rays" of a self-tanning application. When exfoliating always finish each section of your body with strokes that move up the limbs and toward the torso. This technique has the added health benefit of increasing the circulation of both blood and lymph, which is particularly important in areas prone to cellulite.
The final touch is a self tanning application which is easier than ever with the near goof-proof spray versions that are widely available. For the more tanning-timid, try blending a solution of 1-part self tanner to 2-parts body lotion. This combination will produce a hint of color that you can layer on nightly until the desired shade is achieved. By using a scented lotion this combo will also minimize the slightly unpleasant aroma most self-tanners impart.
While pampering yourself in the powder room is not substitute for a real beach vacation, your sea-spa-series is likely to improve the way your look and feel. The combination of minerals, aromatherapy and soft, glowing skin will have you behaving like a beautiful beach babe, even if you're marooned in your bathroom in Boise.
