Dull Hair

Dull hair looks limb and lifeless. Often times in this case your hair needs moisture and protein. Lubricants will help add shine to your dull hair by spreading over the outside of your hair cuticles.
Other times you hair may loose its shine or have split ends. Occasionally the color will become drab. Often times this is due to a lack of oil content in the hair; however, frequent washing with harsh water, hair not rinsed thoroughly, dietary deficiencies and excessive use of hair spray can cause dull hair.
One of the biggest causes of dull hair is product build up which is caused by the residue left in your hair from conditioners and styling products. This residue weighs down the hair and leaves it looking heavy and drab.
Consider moisturizers with humectants. The easiest option is safflower oil. You do not apply this oil directly to your scalp instead you apply it on the ends of your hair while it is dry and leave it in for two hours before washing.
To prevent dull hair try not to use heat styling agents like curling irons and blow dryers as this can cause damage that will result in dull hair. However, if you must use these products use them on a low setting to prevent as much damage as possible.
A good way to get results is to alternate your shower days between using moisturizing shampoos and water rinsing only. Once a week apply oil on your hair and shampoo an hour later for added results. Another way is to add a mixture of curd and egg to your hair once a week before shampooing.
Clarifying shampoos are helpful to wash away residue from your conditioners and styling agents. These residues stick to your hair and scalp and prevent your hair from achieving luster and shine.
When you are in the shower try to wash with cool or cold water so you can seal the hair cuticles and add bounce to your hair. For best treatment results consider trimming your hair to short or shoulder length. In addition, try to avoid using hair products that contain lanolin, silicone, two-in-one products, gels or sprays since they will increase the dull appearance of your hair.
Try using a protein based hair conditioner and once you are out of the shower dry clean your hair. To do this you wrap a nylon stocking around a brush and stroke your hair a dozen times.
To reduce residue build up consider using a clarifying shampoo that will help wash away as much of the excess residue as possible. After shampooing and conditioning your hair do a quick cold water rinse. This is supposed to seal the hair cuticles and give you hair some added shine.
If you are still not satisfied with the appearance of your hair then next try a volumizing shampoo along with a light conditioner. This will smooth and coat the cuticle, but not to the extent of weighing down the hair.
No matter what you should avoid the use of leave in conditioners at least until you restore your dull hair to a look that satisfies you. The best conditioners for dull hair contain proteins that will help add volume to your hair.
When drying your hair if you must use a blow dryer bend over so your hair hangs towards the floor and dry from the roots first down to the ends, pulling hair away from the roots. Applying a little bit of mousse or hairspray to the roots will give your hair extra lift. Always remember that when it comes to dull hair less is more.
