Waterproof MakeupWell-applied waterproof makeup lasts all day, and isn’t affected by any external factors such as weather, perspiration, and of course, water. They are designed to not run, smear or come off, even when wet. This is a huge help in places with humid weather, where makeup tends to run and smudge. Female athletes use waterproof makeup to prevent their makeup from being ruined by perspiration. Actresses also prefer waterproof makeup since it is unaffected by tears. Women on vacation carry waterproof makeup along, since it is a good way of looking their best without having to sacrifice precious time in the pool or sea. You can choose from a wide range of waterproof cosmetics, right from mascara to lipstick to rouge. Most cosmetics have a silicon-based oil called dimethicone in them. This helps in keeping the skin soft. In addition, it also assists in giving smooth application of the product. A waterproof version of the same oil, called dimethicone copolyol is used in waterproof cosmetics, and is formulated to adhere to the skin and hair. While waterproof makeup can be very convenient to keep makeup looking fresh and clean, it has some health concerns. Since it cannot be removed with water, it requires special solvents for removal. These solvents are usually quite harsh, and will also remove the essential sebum from the skin. Sebum is produced in the skin, and is an oily substance. It serves as a barrier to chemicals, pollutants and irritants, thereby protecting the skin. If it is removed, the skin becomes vulnerable to infection, sun burn and other problems. Over a period of time, the skin can become dry and problems like wrinkles and premature aging can surface. Women suffering from eyelid dermatitis should not use waterproof makeup. Eyelid dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction to compounds that come into contact with the skin, appears as a puffiness or rash on the eyelids and surrounding area. If women with eyelid dermatitis use waterproof cosmetics, they will only irritate and aggravate it. This is because of the adhesive chemicals present, and the removal techniques that have to be applied. Taking all the factors into consideration, waterproof makeup should only be saved for special occasions like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or maybe even prom night. Excessive use should be avoided, to prevent damage to the skin. After all, why put your skin in potential danger by using it at times when it’s not really needed? | I am a freshman in high school and I conducted an experiment to determine whether or not waterproof makeup is all about it is cracked up to be. First, I put a smear of waterproof makeup on a piece of paper and submerged it in water (like you would if you were doing paper chromatography) and I did the same with a regular name brand makeup. Like it promised the waterproof makeup did not fade or smudge, however a portion of it did flake off the paper. The regular makeup, on the other hand faded to a greyish color whereas it had been jet black originally. Since the waterproof makeup passed the first part of the test, I decided to actually wear it into water, like in a good deal of commercials. Unlike the commercials the makeup did not stay perfectly intact, instead it was washed all the way down my face. I determined that although waterproof makeup may be more efficient than regular makeup, it is not worth the harm caused by removers and wear it everyday. | |
