Home :: Skin Disorders :: Cysts Skin CystsCysts are round nodules under the skin that are filled with cheesy contents or fluid. Skin cysts can occur when a gland becomes plugged and begins to slowly increase in size. This results in an enlarging "bump" under the skin (sebaceous cyst). The cyst contains fluid that may become infected with bacteria leading to a reddened, tender lump, palpable on the skin surface. In this case, it will progress to form an abscess, requiring incision (lancing) and drainage to release the infected material so that healing can be initiated. Warm, wet compresses to the site and antibiotics are often included in the treatment. Chronic, noninfected sebaceous cysts may enlarge and require elective (nonemergent) surgical correction. A General Surgeon or Dermatologist are skilled in this area.
