Dyshidrotic Dermatitis is also referred to as pompholyx; it is a form of eczema that affects the hands. It usually starts on the side of the fingers as itchy bumps that then turn into a rash. These tiny bumps appear to be deep in the skin. They can become very itchy for the individual that develops them.

Who can get them?

Anyone can get Dyshidrotic Dermatitis. It affects all races equally. It occurs slightly more frequently in women than in men. It seems more common in individuals between the ages of twenty to forty.

What can cause them?

The exact cause of Dyshidrotic Dermatitis is unknown. It appears that most people who develop it might be predisposed to it. Stress and reactions to detergents and other chemicals can also be a contributing factor. There appears to be some evidence that smokers develop this form more frequently than non-smokers. Individual who experience an abnormal amount of sweating may also have this skin disorder.

How does it happen?

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis often starts out as a result of an individual experience a high level of stress. There is an indication, that some change triggers this skin disorder. The skin will start to peel along with tiny blisters that begin to appear deep in the skin. The individual will also experience an itching and burning sensation.

Where do they appear?

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis often appears on the hands and/or the feet of the individual.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of Dyshidrotic Dermatitis include the development of bumps at the side of the fingers and toes that gradually turn into an itchy rash. It can begin to peel from the side of the fingers and feet. This skin disorder will usually clear up after two weeks. Some individuals could experience mostly one stage of the aliment or the other, and sometimes both at the same time.

How can it be diagnosed?

A doctor or dermatologists can easily diagnosis Dyshidrotic Dermatitis as its symptoms are easy to recognize. It is characterized by the tiny blisters and rash on the sides of the fingers and/ or the feet.

What treatments are available?

Treatments vary from individual to individual depending on how severe the condition is. In most cases, no treatment at all is required, and the rash and blisters will clear up on their own. The skin can take a long time to recover from this skin aliment, and Dyshidrotic Dermatitis can recur, so you need to be careful and take care of your skin.

A topical steroid is often prescribed to help reduce the itching and the inflammation. Antibiotics are commonly given to treat any secondary infection that might develop. Individuals are also advised to wear gloves when handling certain chemicals, and putting their hand in water, so that it does not get further irritated. If you develop this skin aliment on your feet, you should wear socks that are mainly cotton. A moisturizer should be constantly applied to the inflicted area, this helps to reduce the itching and soften the skin. It needs to be applied liberally at least two or three times a day and remember to keep the area dry.

Cool compresses and soaks are used to relieve and dry up the blisters. These soaks should be a solution made of vinegar and water. This however, needs to be done at least four times a day, and for at least fifteen minutes.

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis can be a very difficult skin disorder to have; it has more of an adverse affect your day to day activities, more than other rashes and growths. Protecting the skin from further damages becomes crucial. While in most cases these are simple and non life threatening aliments, if can skin aliment is uncomfortable it is important to speak to your doctor and try and relieve some of those symptoms.
