Who can get them?Pompholyx can affect individuals of all races. It is most common in individuals between the ages of twenty to forty. It occurs slightly more frequently in females than in males. What can cause them?The exact cause of Pompholyx is unknown. However, they are a few factors that may trigger this skin disorder. These include: abnormal amount of sweating by the individual, hot weather, stress, grief, and in some cases the use of certain detergents in washing dishes or clothes. How does Pompholyx happen?Pompholyx will often appear after a person experiences a high level or stress, or abnormal amount of sweating due to the weather. There is an indication, that some change triggers this skin disorder. The skin will start to peel along with tiny blisters that begin to appear deep in the skin. The individual will also experience an itching and burning sensation. Where do they appear?Pompholyx often appears on the hands and/or the feet. What are the symptoms of Pompholyx?The symptoms of Pompholyx include peeling and tiny blisters begin to appear. In the later stages, the skin could become cracked, and crusted over. This skin disorder will usually clear up after two weeks. Some individuals could experience mostly one stage of the aliment or the other, and sometimes both at the same time. How can it be diagnosed?A doctor or dermatologist can easily diagnose Pompholyx as it has the distinct symptoms; these are the tiny blisters that appear on the hands and/or the feet. Some individuals with Pompholyx are found to be allergic to nickel, and in this case they will have to avoid contact with this metal. What treatments are available for Pompholyx?Treatments vary for individuals depending on what stage of the skin aliment they are at. There is no quick treatment for Pompholyx; it will take a combination of treatments to bring relief to the person. Cool compresses and soaks are used to relieve and dry up the blisters. These soaks should be a solution made of vinegar and water. This however, needs to be done at least four times a day, and for at least fifteen minutes. A moisturizer should be constantly applied to the inflicted area, this helps to reduce the itching and soften the skin. It needs to be applied liberally at least two or three times a day. A topical steroid is also at times prescribed to use at night to help with the inflamed area, and the itching. It is usually given at the later stages of the skin disorder. Antibiotics are also given to help combat any secondary infection that may develop. Also, individuals may have to wear protective gloves on the hand to prevent any further irritation, especially if your hands are constantly in water. In more extreme cases, medications such as methotrexate and botulinum toxin are prescribed for this condition. Everyone should remember that your skin is the most exposed part of your body, everyday it is battered with an array of different elements, from the sun and the weather to chemicals in the air and the food that we eat. If you develop any sort of strange growth or rash, you should speak to your doctor or dermatologist about it. While in most cases these are simple and non life threatening aliments, it is always better to make sure that it is properly taken care of. |
