What Causes Female Hair Loss?

Hair loss of any kind can be awful for most women. While there are times in a woman's life when hair loss is normal, such as after the birth of a child and during menopause, the loss of any hair can still be very disturbing. Women often place a high value on hair, quality and style.  Our hair can be an important part of how we feel about ourselves. Bad hair days can affect our self-esteem and cause us to feel self-conscious. So when a woman experiences significant hair loss, she usually acts quickly to find out how to take care of it and restore her hair to its original quality and appearance.

Hair loss in women is increasing. It is becoming more and more common for many women to have some kind of hair loss. Statistics tell us that one in every five women will have hair loss. This is similar to male pattern hair loss, but is called female pattern hair loss. Men tend to lose hair at the hairline and crown of their heads. Women tend to notice a more all over thinning of their hair rather than specific spots that are thinning.

Many things can cause women to lose hair:

  • An unhealthy diet or
  • Crash dieting can cause it.
  • Stress can cause hair loss.
  • A serious accident or illness can cause hair loss.
  • Taking certain kinds of medication can also cause it. Some medications for controlling high blood pressure and oral contraceptives can cause hair to thin.
  • Using harsh styling techniques such as constant blow-drying and heat styling can also be hair loss factors.
  • Chemicals in hair colorants and in permanent waves can also cause hair loss,
  • Doing your hair on cornrows or braids repeatedly causes it to be pulled too tightly and can make hair break off.

It is important to be good to your hair and to use sense when choosing a hairstyle.

The three most common factors to female hair loss are:

  • Genetics,
  • Hormones and
  • Age.

Genetic predisposition for any type of baldness can be inherited from either parent. Hormones play a role in hair loss. Estrogen stimulates hair growth. After menopause, the body produces less estrogen, and that can make hair brittle, finer, and more likely to break off or thin. Aging is the final factor in hair loss. During aging, our hair becomes less strong, less healthy, less likely to be full and thick.

Some causes of female hair loss can be controlled. Others cannot. Try to identify the cause of female hair loss before deciding which treatment would be best. Since some hair loss can be caused by relatively simple lifestyle changes, try those first. If you find, that you need to consider other options, there are many different hair loss treatments available, and many produce very good results.
