How to get Hip-Hop Hairstyle

The hip-hop hair is a style that has started during the earliest record historical times but has only recently grown in popularity to become a modern fashion statement. The latest hairstyle that has emerged as a fashion trend is the dreadlocks or hip-hop hair.

The Start of Dreadlocks

The common mistake belief is that dreadlocks were started by Reggae rock musicians. From the very earliest of times, dreadlocks have evolved into the style they are today. There are many different opinions on when the first appearance of the dreadlocks occurred, but they have been around since the early parts of history.

Throughout history many people have wore dreadlocks including the Australian aborigines, the tribes people in New Guinea, religious monks and several African tribes. Although when dreadlocks started they weren’t developed as a hair fashion trend. Rather the hair style had deeper meaning for those who chose to wear dreadlocks.

The creation of the modern dreadlocks occurred over a long period of time and actually took several years. Early styles allowed the hair to twist, knot and matte in its own way on its own time. As a result the dreadlock style was a matted and knotted hairstyle.

Dreadlocks began to be promoted among musicians with the start of Bob Marley in the mid-seventies. This helped bring attention the dreadlock fashion trend and established the hairstyle as a part of the reggae rock scene.

Then in the nineties when dreadlocks resurfaced in the rock groups it became a hot new trend with the hair and beauty industry and it began to be exploited and promoted. It used to take five years to develop dreadlocks, but now stylists were able to provide people with the style in as little as five hours. In addition, the fashion industry started to come up with a wide variety of modified dreadlocks including the multi-colored hair and the “dread perms”. The style was greatly adopted by many different people in the nineties.

John Galliano for Christian Dior was responsible for taking the dreadlock fashion trend to the next level with his new fashion collection. His Rasta inspired outfits were wore along with a variety of dreadlock inspired hairstyles by the runway models. Fashion accessories such as matching silk scarves were used to add glamour to the dreadlock inspired styles. The dreadlock styles were also worn up and either tied or pinned high on the scalp to give a dramatic appearance. The models also wore add on hair in multiple colors.

Caring for Dreadlock Hair

Although not as popular as it was in the nineties, the dreadlock or hip-hop hairstyle still exists today. Perhaps soon the hairstyle will re-emerge in a new trend. A new industry focused on offering dreadlock hair care items such as wax, shampoo and jewelry is just one sign that this hairstyle is on the rise again. There is a full line of products known as KnottyBoy products which features wax for blonde and brunettes, shampoo for the dreadlock hairstyle and several related accessories for those with dreadlock or hip-hop hair. As the dreadlock and hip-hop hairstyle continues to grow we will likely continue to see new products added to the market regularly.
