Nails grow constantly and it would be wise to invest in your very own manicure kit and give yourself one at home. It is easy to keep up with nail care by following the same steps described in a salon. Long nail designs can be achieved at home although you might need a little practice.

A manicure is a matter of seven simple steps: Remove any old finger nail polish, gel or long nail designs with cotton, it's the most absorbant fiber. File and shape your nails in one direction only, parallel to the nail bed, and don't curve into the corner of the nail. Massage cuticle oil or moisturizer into the nail and cuticle for a two minutes, then soak your fingers in soapy water to soften the cuticles. Gently push your cuticles back with tip of an orangewood stick. Rub your hands with moisturizer and then wipe your nails with a clean cloth to get rid of residual oils on the nails. Apply base coat of nail polish to help the polish adhere, then apply your polish, one coat is fine. Finally, if you are in a hurry, apply a fast-drying top coat.

GET A FRENCH MANICURE AT HOME!

This is easy, and we advice you do the manicure at least once a fortnight (if not every week).
For the French manicure:
. Take lukewarm water in a small tub.
. Add 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide
. Add any shampoo for formation of foam.
. Keep your hands in the solution for at least 10 minutes.
. Optional: Now pat dry your hands and bleach them and once again keep your hands in the solution.
. Clean your nails
. Then remove the dead skin with cuticle cutter
. Finish by pat drying the hands and applying hand cream/lotion.
. Massage for from elbow downwards for 5 minutes.

CUTICLE CARE

Trimming the cuticles is a big no. Your cuticles is live skin that protects the nail, and cutting them can lead to injury and infection, apply cuticle remover and push back the cuticles gently with a pumice stick in small circular motions before painting the nails.

THE TRUE GIVEAWAY OF AGE IS IN YOUR HANDS!

They say that no matter how much you maintain yourself, the true giveaway of age is in your hands. So why not groom them as you do the rest of your anatomy?
We give you some tips on how to keep your nails healthy and well manicured so that you can give the beauty salon a miss for want of time or even money!

Know your nails.
. Brittle nails: Include skimmed milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, fish and sprouts in your diet to increase your protein and calcium intake.
. Broad nails: This one is a must try. Try leaving a very narrow strip on either side, devoid of polish. This gives your nails a longer, narrower look.
. Long nails: Apply a white frosted nail polish on the under side of your nails and increase the appeal.
. Short, stubby nails: Lighter coloured nail polish can make your stumps look longer and sleeker!

Quick Tips.

. Don't peel off chipped nail polish, as this can result in removal of the protective layer of the nail. Instead use a nail polish remover to get the job done.
. Instead of your usual nail cutter, try using nail clippers for cutting nails. This way your nails will tend to crack or split less.
. For Cleaner, whiter nails, just rub a slice of lemon under your nails and voila, you'll see the transformation.

I have always bitten my nails. Then one time I decided to rub garlic on my nails, it strengthens them and it is a horrible test. Even though it smells i put a pretty scented lotion around the nail.

I understand how hard it is to stop biting your nails, i have done it for the last 16 years and stopped about four weeks age. The difference is amazing. I stopped biting them by using Sally Hansons No Nail bite product on, I know that most people will keep biting their nails even with the product on, but if you can taste it tell yourself to STOP! Also chew gum on a regular basis. you'll have something to do with your mouth and also apply a strong nail hardener, the shine will put you off from biting them (hopefully) i hoped this has helped!!!

I also bite my nails and I would also like to know how I can stop. It's not going to look pretty if I paint them and they are extremely short.
