History of plastic surgeryThe ancient contributors to Plastic Surgery :There is historical evidence that in ancient world, the plastic surgery was in some form even 2500 years ago. Physician and surgeon in India in 8th century BC have carried out skin grafts. Susrutha, a great Indian surgeon of 6th century BC has written a book Susrutha Samhita. It describes various surgical methods and surgical instruments. Susrutha Samhita contains a series of books written by Susrutha and his disciples and some of the operation in details has been described in the book. Susrutha is also known to be father of plastic and cosmetic surgery. The other well-known knowledge source of that time includes Dhanwantri, Divodassa and Aurabhra. Roman contribution in ancient plastic surgery is also significant. Romans have carried out surgical work for repairing face, ears and nose in and around 1st century BC. In Europe some work on replacing the skin entirely was taken in 15th century, however major contribution in plastic surgery came in 18th century. Dr. John Peter Mettauer was the first American plastic surgeon. Dr. Mettauer born in 1787 in Virginia and carried out his first cleft plate operation by the surgical instruments designed by himself. Development in plastic surgery during World War I:During the World War I, many people affected by it and there was a need to perform plastic surgery on number of people. It was the time when the plastic surgeons realized to invent better techniques and perform better operations. The great medical surgeon from New Zealand, Sir Harold Gillies is considered to be father of modern plastic surgery. During and after the World War I, the plastic surgeons saw the different people having need of different types of plastic surgery such as some of the people needs it for the Jaw, some needs it for face and neck, some needs it for head, soldier or foot and so on. The surgeons earlier carried out plastic surgery for mainly face, neck, nose or forehead only. During this period the concept of anesthesia also came up and doctors realized to use it so that people do not go through the trauma of great pain and inconvenient during and after surgery. Plastic surgery after World War I:Doctors during World War I, do not have any coordination and knowledge sharing and thereafter two great surgeons realize to have a professional organization where they can put their thought and can share the knowledge. The two great plastic surgeons Jacques Maliniac and Gustave Aufricht formed American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS) in the year 1921. The professional membership was open to physicians having medical and dental qualifications. During and after World War II, the professionals associated to ASPRS, carried out the plastic surgeries to many war injured civilians as well as military people. |
