Retinoids to Aid Several Ailments

The 'retinoids' refer to a group of chemical compound, which are associated with vitamin A chemically. They are used extensively in medicines and chiefly they are used to control the growth of the epithelial cell in the body of an individual.

Retinoids play a significant role in the body of person as they perform several functions that comprise regulation of explosion and segregation of cell, expansion of bone tissue, activation of genes that repress tumor and immune function.

With enhancement in the medical sector going on at a rapid speed, an extensive research is made in the reinoid’s capability to cure skin cancers. Nowadays, a 9-cis-retinoic acid is being used for treating the lesions of the skin from Kaposi's sarcoma.

The retinoids can be broadly classified in 3 generations that consist of first generation retinoids, second-generation retinoids and third generation retinoids. First generation retinoids comprise retinal, isotretinoin, retinol, alitretinoin and tretinoin (Retin-A). The second-generation retinoids comprise metabolite acitretin and etretinate. Third generation retinoids comprise bexarotene and tazarotene.

The structure of the molecule retinoid basically comprise of a polar end group, a polyene side chain and a cyclic end group. The system that is formed by breaking of C=C double bonds in the side chain of polyene is accountable for the retinoids color. Therefore, retinoids can also be referred to as the chromophores. By alternating the terminating groups and the side chains several classes of retinoids can be formed.

Since the first and second generation retinoids have a single bond and double bond, and are very flexible, this enables them to bind with numerous chromophores. In comparison to them, third generation retinoids are not much flexible and thus are not able to interact with more retinoid receptors.

The retinoids can be toxic if they are consumed in large amounts for an extended span. In children it usually varies from 25,000 to 500,000 IU per day. The high intake of retinoid may cause some side effects like skin lesions, hepatosplenomegaly, Anorexia, general malaise, bleeding, pseudotumor cerebri and papilloedema. A constant overdose will also lead to an enhanced accountability of biological membranes and external skin layer to shed.

With new development and researches taking place in this sector, the function of retinoids in cutaneous harmful influence in several medications that consist of proguanil, which is known as an antimalarial drug. It is suggested that the medications like proguanil plays a key role in upsetting the homeostasis of retinoids.

Retinoids play a significant function that aid in the treatment of several ailments. Retinoids can be counted to have beneficial outcomes. They are also very valuable in the treatment of numerous dermatological conditions that include provocative disorders of the skin, photo aging and skin cancers. They also aid in the treatment of psoriasis that refers to the disorder of the enhanced turn over of the cell. The use of retinoids is also made in treatment of common conditions of the skin is acne.
